23

I would really like:
1) To watch The Virgin Suicides
2) New Rainbows

That's all. Oh, and for someone to take my final exams for me and the school year to end in 10 minutes.

culture and organized sports

Yesterday I attended the Holi Festival of Colors in Spanish Fork. Why there is a Hindu temple in Spanish Fork, Utah, I will never know, but the festival was a lot of fun. The Festival of Colors is an Indian tradition that celebrates the legend of Prahlad and Hiranyakshyap. Hiranyakshyap was evil and wanted everyone to worship him, but to his horror his own son Prahlad began to worship Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakshyap asked his sister Holika to enter a blazing fire with Prahlad in her lap, because Holika was able to enter fires without getting burned. Prahlad was saved for his devotion, while Holika paid the price. Fires are burned the night before Holi. The colors refers to the legend of Radha and Krishna (Hindu deity "it" couple). Krishna thought it was fun to apply color to Radha and the other gopis (Radha's maidservants). This prank is represented by the throwing of chalk at the festival.

Now that I have enlightened myself and my loyal readers (ha!) here is a picture of what the majority of the festival was. My group arrived late (bigger ha) so we missed the main festivities, but I still managed to get covered in chalk and participate in the Hare Krishna chant. (Which, if you were curious, is a mantra repeated during the festival which is supposed to be the pure love of God (Krishna) and also appears in George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord") The chant part consisted of middle-aged men repeating the mantra onstage with guitars while everyone else jumped around. The big trend was crowdsurfing, which to my horror, I participated in for a brief minute. It was actually a lot of fun and the temple was beautiful. It reminded me of Candyland.
Pre-festival, I played in a soccer tournament with my ward. Please hold your laughter. My body is now punishing me for thinking I could participate in organized sports because every muscle, limb and joint aches. Seriously, I wince when I walk. No fun.
24 days until home!! The year is finally winding down to an end and I can't wait. Spanish Fork vaguely reminded me of Lancaster, especially the smell. I watched High School Musical 3 and the Hannah Montana Movie this weekend- both reminded me of the end of senior year and spring. I liked it, but it made me a little bit sad.

Finally, does anyone know where this leather jacket is from?? I have been on the neverending quest to find the perfect leather jacket, and I think I've found it, but the designer is nowhere to be found, and since I'm not chummy with Dakota, I don't think I'll ever know. But if anyone does have a clue where it's from, share!

miroslava and march madness

girl crush
(gûrl krsh):
n. A female's object of affection that is of the same sex. Most commonly girl crushes arise from one female's admiration for another female's looks, style, personality etc. Also the desire for a best friendship is common among girl crushes.

Enter Miroslava Duma, my biggest girl crush as of now. Miroslava (called Mira by her friends) is an editor for Russian Harper Bazaar. She's been on Jak & Jil and The Sartorialist, which is pretty much as much of an honor as a Vogue cover these days. Not only is she gorgeous, has the perfect figure and can pull of bangs, but her wardrobe is to die for. Seriously. Who else can make leather shorts look good?? My favorite part about Mira is how feminine she always looks. A lot of today's It girls have been photographed in leather jackets, studs and motorcycle boots, which, don't get me wrong, look great, but are just not me. Mira can pull off the badass biker chick look and sexy librarian all in the same day, flawlessly, without skipping a beat. Her closet is #1 on my to-raid list.

In other news, the month of March is going faster than I thought it would. It's still going slow, but we're already 11 days before the end of the month! I went to yoga and ran this morning, which always feels good. After attending my 6th music concert of the semester (how cultured!) I watched BYU lose to Kansas State and the rest of my bracket go up in flames. I'm not a huge sports fan, but after soccer, basketball is my favorite sport to watch. Usually I pick schools based on their names, academic credibility or uniform color. This year I thought it would be cool if I actually looked at the rankings when I made my decisions. Sadly, my sporadic decisions system of last year has proved to be more successful than the logical ESPN decisions system I adopted this March. Oh well. It was kind of fun watching the first round BYU game in math class. Better luck next year!

sunny st. patty's

Today it was 60 degrees outside, which doesn't sound very warm, but after months of bipolar Utah snow/rain/sun, it felt appropriate to celebrate the sun by lying outside. It's funny to see everyone outside basking/doing homework. I like this picture because Jadyn looks like she's having an epiphany.
i need the smell of summer
i need its noises in my ear

For the majority of the month of February and into March, study breaks consisted of me visiting style.com and reading the Fashion Week reviews and watching live feeds of the shows. Now that Fashion Week is over, I miss the daily updates on style. One of my absolute favorite parts of Paris Fashion Week was the shoes at Louis Vuitton. Look at these beauties! And I'm not even a shoe person. Marc's collection was really pretty and lady-like and I actually think I would have worn a lot of what went down. A lot of the shows were kind of outrageous, and more entertaining than wearable, but I think Marc Jacobs does a good job creating things that are appealing to the average consumer. Sadly, the average consumer can blow $900 on a pair of shoes... alas! I will live my retail desires through blog posts.
Speaking of Fashion Week, what happened to Gemma Ward?? She was like, my favorite model in 9th grade (immafreak) and I feel like she disappeared off the face of the earth. I mean, nbd, but I was just wondering.

When I went back to my room today, I found a little brownie wrapped up and stuck to my door with a note from a girl on my floor that says why she's lucky to know me. Everyone on our floor had one. Isn't that sweet? I like St. Patrick's Day.

Another award-winning discovery: Ladysmith Black Mambazo is real. I mean, who knew?

i'll take my leave

I'll bring your words along with me, maybe one day they will mean something. For now they buzz and crumble down a little bit too easily, from a time that I am not quite over, what the hell is wrong with me?

(When I saved this pic to my computer I realized I saved it as 'gag' instead of gaga. Kind of appropriate) So... HOW BOUT THE NEW GAGA VID?? BYU filtering, in its infinite wisdom and ability to foresee the future has already blocked this lovely gem. But don't worry, you're not missing much. Just Gaga, lacking any form of clothing except caution tape and pasties, seductive sandwich eating and mass diner homicide via poisoned honey. NBD. Actually this brilliant review pretty much sums up the mess. Ok, I will admit that I like Gaga (wait, what?), but this was one of the ugliest things I've seen in a long time. Like we get it- people think you're a transvestite/like to ruin Alexander McQueen for everyone. But she's going for shock and she definitely got it with this one. She's definitely going to be one of the most remembered artists of the decade and I guess if it sells records... Whatever. She does what she wants.

It's a pretty day in Provo. Dress with no leggings weather. You know how I said music takes you back to a specific period of your life? So does weather, for me. Like right now I'm remembering senior year skipping study hall to go to Starbucks or get Rita's and the windows down and listening to bands I've never heard of. I can't wait until summer. 38 days until home!

Oh. Why does waking up to work out never get any easier? I mean, it's March. And I just realized that one of my info boxes sounds like I enjoy collecting babies. Cool.

don't wake me i plan on sleeping in

Last week I had the strangest dream, where everything was exactly how it seemed, where there was never any mystery of who shot John F. Kennedy. It was just a man with something to prove- slightly bored and severely confused. He steadied his rifle with his target in the center and became famous on that day in November. Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in. Again last night I had that strange dream, where everything was exactly how it seemed. No concerns about the world getting warmer. People just thought they were just getting rewarded for treating others as they'd like to be treated, for obeying stop signs and curing diseases.

I re-discovered The Postal Service's Give Up album this weekend. I love how music takes you back to a specific time in your life. Motion City Soundtrack's 'Future Freaks Me Out' reminds me of Thanksgiving and Stone Roses' 'I Wanna Be Adored' reminds me of November of senior year. Like this album takes me back to 8th grade and getting mixed CDs from the boy I liked.
This weekend I also discovered stockholm street style and literally went through 150+ pages. It's very similar to Scott Schuman and Tommy Ton's work, but I like the subjects stockholm uses better. Like this little girl for instance. She looks more put together than the majority of people I've encountered who are twice her age. I know her mother is responsible, but still. Also watched the 1996 version of Lolita. Talk about a death scene. Frank Langella is crazy. I read the book in 8th or 9th grade and kind of forgot about it, but I saw someone post a screenshot of the 1996 version so I decided to check it out. I guess it was well-done, I want to see the 1962 version to see if the 60's Lolita was less annoying. 1996 Lolita made me want to run her over and leave her on the side of the road. Honestly. She lost her charm after the first 10 minutes. But the girl Humbert fell in love with as a teenager was gorgeous. I guess Lolita was supposed to be annoying though? I forget, it's been so long since I've read that thing. Also have been catching up on Arrested Development. Ahh so funny and good. I love dry humor. I miss watching Gilmore Girls with my sister though.

Today was lazy, because it's Sunday. I completely missed the daylight savings shenanigans. I don't even feel more tired than normal. 39 days until home!! Oh yeah, I started a blog.
